ADVENTITIOUS ROOT INITIATION AND GROWTH IN RELATION TO OXYGEN SUPPLY IN GERMINATING RICE SEEDLINGS

Authors

SUMMARY

Adventitious root initiation and root growth occur in rice seedlings germinating under favourable environmental oxygen concentrations whereas rice seedlings germinating at low oxygen concentrations or under anaerobiosis form adventitious root primordia but show no visible adventitious root growth. Transferring the seedlings from unfavourable to favourable oxygen environments results in root growth. Thus the phenomena of adventitious root primordia initiation and of root growth differ profoundly with respect to their oxygen requirements.
