Tomato and potato leaves were inoculated with either a compatible or an incompatible strain of Phytophthora infestans. The progress of the ensuing progressive or hypersensitive reactions were followed using light microscopy. Transverse sections of tissue as well as strips of living epidermis were examined. Cell death was found to occur within 10 min of infection by an incompatible strain of the fungus. The migration of the host nucleus to the site of infection, in the hypersensitive reaction, was observed.
