SUMMARY

Reproductive structures of Syringoderma abyssicola (S. & G.) Levring are unique. They begin development as normal unilocular sporangia. However, the initial products of cytokinesis develop a cell wall, but not as in plurilocular sporangia. Some of these walled cells may in turn divide to produce a tetrad of naked flagellate cells. This is in contrast to other members of the Dictyotales, the order in which S. abyssicola is currently placed.
