An apparatus is described for simulating the natural environmental conditions relating to large thallose lichens, to enable their rates of nitrogen fixation to be estimated using 16N2 enriched nitrogen gas. Daylength, temperature, light intensity, thallus moisture and carbon dioxide concentration can be controlled and seasonal conditions can be reproduced. The rate of long term 15N2 incorporation can be compared with that of acetylene reduction measured over short periods and the relationship established. Details of materials and suppliers are given.
