SUMMARY

The mediation by phytochrome of the amount of gibberellin (GA)-like substances extractable from etioplasts is well documented. Results presented here show that phytochrome mediates the amount of GA-like substances extractable from Hordeum vulgare L. chloroplasts, and changes in the chlorophyll a/b ratio of chloroplasts. The results are discussed in relation to shade detection and the efficiency of photosynthesis in the natural environment.
