Since its publication, the authors of Simon et al. (2005) have brought to our attention a correction that needs to be made in the Material and Methods section of their paper (p. 244, lines 6–11). This should read: ‘Each sandwich was frozen in a high-pressure freezer, as described in detail by Mendgen et al. (1991), either in a HPM 010 (Bal-Tec, Principality of Liechtenstein) at the Max-Planck-Institute for Developmental Biology, Tübingen, or in a Wohlwend-HPF (Engineering Office M. Wohlwend GmbH, Sennwald, Switzerland) at the University of Ulm, Germany, and stored in liquid nitrogen until use.’
