*There have been many changes in the industry since 1980 when this paper was given. Mention is made of the development of plastic containers for carbonated drinks, and today PET bottles have gained a very large share of the carbonated drinks market. Under the heading “Ready-to-serve Drinks and Nectars” there have been several developments in the field of mixed and tropical fruit drinks which are rapidly gaining importance in our market. Finally, it is interesting to note that the consumption of fruit juices, which we were expecting to reach 10 litres per capita in 1983, was actually just over 11 litres per capita with an RSP of over £300 million.

The history of the development of the fruit juice and soft drinks industry from Roman times to the present day is outlined. Methods of packaging are also discussed.
