Summary
Low haemoglobin levels were found to be very uncommon in 497 pregnant women living at 2500 metres above sea level, despite the fact that 37 per cent of them were desperately poor. The explanation for this may be their unusually high iron intake but a less than normal increase in plasma volume or a greater than normal increase in red cell mass among the underprivileged women could be contributory factors.
