Summary
Diazepam causes loss of beat-to-beat variation of the fetal heart rate pattern within two minutes of the intravenous administration of 20 mg. This effect lasts an average of 65 minutes. This is not associated with a significant alteration of fetal pH or Apgar score at birth, High fetal plasma levels do not appear to affect the fetus adversely in labour or at birth. Rapid placental transfer occurs and the maternal and fetal blood ratios are variable.
