Summary
In a study of placentae from 3000 consecutive deliveries nearter were of the extrachorial type. All forms of placenta extrachorialis were associated with high maternal parity.
The totally circumvallate placenta is accompanied by an unduly high incidence of threatened abortion, premature labour and fetal hypoxia, and an excessive proportion of infants with either partially or totally circumvallate placentae show intrauterine growth retardation. Circummarginate placentae are of no clinical significance.
