Summary
Plasma renin activity (PRA) was estimated in cubital and uterine venous blood of 29 non-pregnant, 15 healthy, and 18 moderately or severely pre-eclamptic women. In some of the pregnant and non-pregnant patients, significantly higher or lower values of uterine PRA were obtained compared to those in peripheral blood. The most consistent results were found in pre-eclamptic patients, in whom significantly higher mean PRA in uterine venous blood was found. It was concluded that the uterus influences peripheral PRA in some non-pregnant as well as in healthy and pre-eclamptic women, causing higher or lower PRA in uterine venous blood than in cubital blood.
