Summary. The cause of death of the Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817 has been attributed to postpartum haemorrhage. Although an autopsy was performed, pulmonary embolism was not diagnosed because this condition was not recognized until 1846, but the clinical description of her last hours clearly points to pulmonary embolization as the most likely cause of death.
