Recruitment trends



Regarding your new section currently titled ‘Opinion and Comment’, ‘Special Issues (in Obstetrics and Gynaecology)’ seems to me like a reasonable name for this new section that, as you have outlined, includes more than an opinion or a comment.

I read with special interest about the recruitment trends reported for obstetrics and gynaecology in the UK. Recruiting new trainees seems to be a spreading problem and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has also long been complaining about it. The increasing number of medico-legal cases, and the flamboyant publicity given to them, is not the most attractive welcome to our specialty. Nowadays, if something would put me off the idea of continuing to pursue a career in the specialty, it would be the legal problems one is likely to encounter. I have noticed that many obstetricians and gynaecologists would rather not practice obstetrics when they have the choice. It would be interesting to ask those who did not choose obstetrics and gynaecology about what put them off.

As regards the shortage of male recruits, I wonder if other surgical specialties face the same shortage. Could it be that emphasising the surgical aspects of the specialty would turn it into a more appealing specialty for male doctors?
