A simple change is necessary to the names of the labia majora and the labia minora. The correct nomenclature is labia lateralis and labia medialis. This is not a pedantic change; it is anatomically correct and could have profound and far-reaching affects on women’s psyche and self-esteem. It is not uncommon for the labia ‘minora’ to protrude past the labia ‘majora’ and for them to be in varying shapes and sizes. These women may currently consider themselves to have an anatomical abnormality. Future text must be changed, and a study conducted to determine the percentage of women with these characteristics. Perhaps this will help to reduce the amount of women turning to labioplasty to alter their appearance.
