Table S1. Summary of the best information available on wintering grounds of British-breeding populations of species considered. In compiling this information, reference was made to Wernham et al. (2002) and Snow and Perrins (1998a, 1998b) for all species, and Jones (1985) for long-distance migrants. Species are shown in ascending order according to their population change between 1967–99. Pheasant excluded from Table.

Table S2. 95% confidence intervals of the change in population sizes of woodland bird species expressed as the abundance in the last year of each given time period relative to that in the first year. These confidence intervals are the 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles of the change estimates derived from the 199 boot-strap replicates of the smoothed trend for each species. Those shown in bold do not overlap with zero and are therefore significant at P < 0.05. The number of sites contributing data to the trends for each species is given under ‘N site*observer’ – sites were given new site codes when the observer changed between years. Species are shown in ascending order according to their population change between 1967–99.
