Bhakti is derived from the Sanskrit root bhaj and menas “being a part of,” or “belonging to.” It is usually translated in its religious context as devotion, worship, faith. One might venture the paraphrase “utter self-abandonment for love's sake.” It is one of the three major ways (marga) or disciplines (yoga) leading to salvation (moksa—release).
