ABSTRACT: The physical set-up and first-year use of Stanford University Hospital's family birth rooms are described. In 1979 6% of births at Stanford occurred in the family birth rooms, while 11% were labor room births. Admissions rose from 13 to 18 per month, bringing the occupancy rate to about 50%. Outcomes were favorable, as were parents’and nurses’evaluations of specific aspects of the family birth room practice.
