ABSTRACT: The factors involved in the passage of drugs into breast milk will be discussed. Breast milk composition, maternal pharmacokinetic characteristics, infant pharmacokinetic characteristics, and feeding patterns all play an important role in determining whether or not a drug passes into breast milk along with the degree of infant ingestion. Drugs that are contraindicated, potentially contraindicated, and potentially not a problem are discussed.
