An Approach to the Nature of Tension Headache

Authors

Abstract

SYNOPSIS

Clinical, EMG and therapeutic studies were used to explore the nature of tension headache. The EMG data indicated that muscle contraction was not important in the genesis of these headaches. In our 402 patients, tiredness, sleepiness, and hypomnesia were very common and, with the headaches, were improved following administration of the CNS stimulant caffeine sodium benzoate. It is suggested that inhibitory mechanisms in the CNS may be important in producing tension headaches.
