Pain is a severe symptom in advanced oral cancer. Pain is often aggravated by the anxiety induced by visible oral cancer. Unless the primary and regional disease are controlled, nothing substantial in terms of pain relief can be achieved in advanced oral cancer by methods like radiotherapy, surgery or chemotherapy. However, additional treatments such as adequate medical and psychological management may result in considerable alleviation of pain. This article emphasizes the need for more organised education of health professionals, research and publications in cancer pain relief. It also underlines the importance of adequate medical and psychological management to alleviate pain from cancer.
