Figure S1. Sliding window analysis for both absences of Patient 3 (windows 5 to 37.5/25 s). Both absences showed BOLD signal changes in thalamus, caudate nucleus and default mode areas, which were more pronounced during the first, longer absence. In the first absence BOLD signal changes in the thalamus and default mode areas exceeded the duration of the absence by several windows. No clear cortical activation was detected. Figure S2. Sliding window analysis for three absences of Patient 4 (windows –2.5 to 20 s). First activation consistent for all absences was found in the paramedian parietal cortex (white arrows) starting 5 s after the onset. The thalamic activation started 7.5 s after onset, deactivation in the caudate nucleus and default mode areas 5 s after onset. Figure S3. Sliding window analysis for both absences of Patient 5 (windows 2.5 to 17.5 s). Both absences showed BOLD signal changes in thalamus and default mode areas starting 7.5 s after the onset. Figure S4. Sliding window analysis for one absence of Patient 6 (windows –2.5 to 20 s). Early cortical activation was detected bilaterally in the frontal cortex. This activation started in the right frontal cortex (white arrow), coinciding with the onset of the absence. Thalamic activation started 7.5 s after the onset and deactivation in default mode areas 2.5 s after onset. In addition, see common remarks for Figures 2, 3 and supplementary Figures S1–S7.

Figure S5. Sliding window analysis for both absences of Patient 7 (windows 5 to 35 s). In both absences the only BOLD signal changes were detected in thalamus, starting 10 and 7.5 s after the onset. In addition, see common remarks for Figures 2, 3 and supplementary Figures S1–S7.

Figure S6. Sliding window analysis for both absences of Patient 8 (windows 0 to 30/17.5 s). For the first, longer absence activations were detected in the thalamus and the left motor cortex (white arrow) starting 7.5 s and 5 s after the onset. Deactivation in the default mode areas started 2.5s after onset, exceeding the duration of the absence by several windows. For the second, shorter absence only little BOLD signal changes were detected in default mode areas, starting 5 s after onset. Figure S7. Sliding window analysis for one absence of Patient 9 (windows –2.5 to 22.5s). Cortical activation was detected in the left frontomesial cortex, starting 7.5 s after the onset of the absence (white arrow). Thalamic activation started 7.5 s after onset, deactivation in the caudate nucleus 5 s after onset and in default mode areas 10s after onset.
