Practitioner Response to “Beyond Smokestacks and Silos: Open-Source, Web-Enabled Coordination in Organizations and Networks”

Captain Carrick Longley, an intelligence officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, was commissioned in 2004. He attended the Basic School, Tactical Communication Cryptologic Course, and the Basic and Signals Intelligence Officer courses prior to reporting to Second Radio Battalion. Significant billets include Radio Reconnaissance Platoon Commander and Officer-in-Charge, Operational Control Element 1–3 during operations in Iraq in 2007. Captain Longley earned a master's degree in information warfare systems engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2010 and is a doctoral student in information sciences.

Major Douglas Zimmerman is currently a student at the Naval Postgraduate School. During his 14-year army career, he served as a psychological operations specialist, a signal officer, and, most recently, an intelligence officer. He has experience in the counterintelligence and counterterrorism fields and has deployed to the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His private sector experience consists of three years of employment at CNN. He holds a master's degree in defense analysis from the Naval Post graduate School and a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Iowa.
