* William A. Galston is Ezra K. Zilkha Chair and Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution and the author of eight books and numerous articles on political theory, American politics, and public policy. His public service includes two years in the U.S. Marine Corps (1969–70) and two and a half years in the White House as deputy assistant to President Bill Clinton for domestic policy.
