This Clinical Bulletin was developed under the direction of the Division of Standards and Practice (DOSP) of the American College of Nurse-Midwives as an educational aid to the members of the College. The Clinical Bulletin is not intended to define a standard of care, to dictate an exclusive course of management, or to substitute for individual professional judgment. It presents recognized methods and techniques of clinical practice that midwives may consider incorporating into their practices. The needs of an individual patient, or the resources and limitations of an institution, or type of practice may appropriately lead to variations in clinical care.
Midwifery as used throughout this document refers to the education and practice of certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) who have been certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) or the ACNM Certification Council (ACC).
The DOSP thanks Kerri Durnell Schuiling, CNM for her participation in the development of this Clinical Bulletin.
