SUMMARY

Based on 20 years of fieldwork and friendship with a Mexican curandera, the author blends ethnographic writing and creative nonfiction to explore the work of Eva Castellanoz of Nyssa, Oregon.1 The article describes a healing the author witnessed at Eva's home, possible outcomes for the client, the future of Mexican healing in the United States, and a different view of the “magical thinking” that critics use to dismiss curanderismo.
