SUMMARY

This article describes how the author learned through fieldwork, over a long period time and in different places, to recognize how the Nahuat organize their emotional experiences in narrative form according to a deeply inculcated social, psychological, and cultural pattern. It describes the path taken to understand what the Nahuat mean by love and envy, jealousy and desire and it affirms the value of the comparative method in anthropology.
