Crossings and Departures: An Interview with Cheryl Clarke and Amiri Baraka in Newark

This interview signals the coming together of two prominent and influential Black artist intellectuals who claim Newark as a site of community—the city that both identify (one earlier than the other)—as a space where they serve and commune with Newakers. During the interview, it had become clear Baraka's and Clarke's few “departures” of perspective had become, at various points in their lives and within some articulations of their artistry, “crossings.” What follows is a brief edited portion of their rich conversation. Readers can also view a brief video of this interview when accessing the online version of the interview.
