The three primary goals of an academic physician should always remain: to heal, to teach, and to maintain a creative and resourceful scientific mind while continuously inspiring the quest for new knowledge and better ways of treating people. Gerald (Jerry) Mandell, MD, is an exemplary model of the academic physician/scientist (see photo). The following reflections on his academic career and achievements are offered in acknowledgment of his role as an inspirational teacher, caring physician, and innovative scientist whose contributions to medicine as a whole will have a profound effect on patient treatment.
