Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is a fundamental skill commonly performed by emergency physicians that requires both cognitive and technical expertise (Figure 1). Competencies required by all emergency medicine practitioners with respect to RSI include understanding the indications for intubation, proper preintubation equipment preparation, technical skill for successful performance of the procedure, proper postintubation tube placement confirmation, and effective team communication skills.
This instructional video (Video Clip S1, available as supporting information in the online version of this paper; the video was created at The Center for Simulation Technology and Academic Research [CSTAR; http://www.cstarweb.com] in Evanston, IL) demonstrates the performance of successful RSI in an elder patient who presented to the emergency department with an acute intracranial hemorrhage. The video also illustrates the performance of cervical spine stabilization during RSI and reviews the necessary management in the context of head injury with intracranial hemorrhage.
