Associate professor of music at NYU. He authored Putting a Song On Top of It: Expression and Identity on the San Carlos Apache Reservation (2004). His research focuses on expressive culture in contexts of contact, and intersections of language and music particularly in non-lexical vocalization.
Associate professor of anthropology and media studies and associate dean of planning and academic affairs at Vassar College. His research includes sound and space, intersections of language and music, and anthropology of sports. He coedited Wired for Sound: Engineering and Technologies in Sonic Cultures (2004).
