Report from the Field: The Army's Land Grab

The U.S. Army proposes tripling the size of its Piñon Canyon maneuver site for live fire exercises. Piñon Canyon is rich in cultural, archaeological and paleontological resources. There is a lack of transparency about military objectives, skepticism about the Army's true rationale, and concern for the military's desire to continue to expand. The Piñon Canyon case tests the boundaries of civilian primacy over the military, and the strength of civil society in asserting its rights in the face of military power.
