Indigenous Beach Vendors in Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco, Mexico

  • One of the interviewers, Michaela Gozalishvili, accompanied me to Puerto Vallarta in June and to Acapulco in July of 2010 to interview 25 women beach vendors in each of those tourist centers. I interviewed 26 men in Puerto Vallarta and 30 men in Acapulco, and then in September interviewed 26 men and 4 women vendors in Cabo San Lucas. All interviews were conducted in Spanish. The interviews were only semi-random. Whatever vendor passed by was invited to give an interview, which lasted from 40 to 50 minutes, in exchange for 50 pesos for his or her time. Many refused on the grounds that they wanted to make a sale or had a client waiting for them. Others sent relatives or paisanos to be interviewed as well.
