Appendix S1. To evaluate equation (4) as an estimator of the Brownian rate matrix using phenotypic diversity I assessed whether rate matrices estimated using equation (4) generate simulated trait matrices with levels of phenotypic diversity close to the observed phenotypic diversity of each Furnariides family.
