This paper theoretically investigates a major argument in favour of labour market flexibility namely, the voluntary signing of contracts. This is done by critically examining one particular argument (made Basu et.al. 2009). It is shown that the argument is not logically sustainable even within the framework of that model. Thus, the theoretical foundation for making labour markets flexible stands on shaky ground.
