As an introduction to this series of papers, a brief history is given of swollen-shoot disease of cacao in the Gold Coast, and the nomenclature for cacao viruses is discussed.
The symptoms of four virus diseases of cacao are described in detail, together with experimental data under the headings: cross-immunity reactions, latent period, seed transmission, staining reaction, heat inactivation and rate of spread.
