JIMRO Co., Ltd. (Gunma, Japan) developed the Adacolumn as the world's first selective granulocyte and monocytes/macrophage apheresis system. The selectivity of this product ensures that most lymphocytes are spared as the majority of cytokines they produce have vital roles for efficient immune function. Adacolumn is filled with specially designed cellulose acetate beads as adsorptive carriers which remove most granulocytes, monocytes/macrophages and a small fraction of lymphocytes (FcγR and complement receptor bearing leukocytes in the column) from the blood. Adacolumn is approved by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan for public funding in the treatment of patients with ulcerative colitis. Adacolumn is currently CE-Marked (validated) by TUV of Germany for rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, ocular Behcet's disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Accordingly, Adacolumn is available in the EU for the treatment of these conditions. We have started the 21st century with a renewed determination to continue our efforts to develop innovative products. Our ultimate goal is to provide effective challenges against refractory diseases worldwide. Company Website: http://www.jimro.com/

Kaneka Corporation (Osaka and Tokyo, Japan) is a global chemical company. Our technologies create products and services that make a worldwide contribution in harmony with the environment. We especially focus on the life science field, such as medical devices, fine chemicals and functional foods. In the field of medical devices, Kaneka has been pursuing the development of a unique system to be used particularly in plasmapheresis, targeting refractory diseases that are hard to cure by conventional therapies. High cholesterol levels in plasma are known to be one of the major risk factors causing coronary heart diseases such as myocardial infarction. Liposorber is a highly selective LDL-adsorption column developed by Kaneka, capable of lowering plasma cholesterol to the desired level. Kaneka is the first company in the world to have started manufacturing this type of adsorption column on an industrial scale. Since its introduction into the market in 1986, our LDL-apheresis system, which combines Liposorber and Sulflux (a membrane-type plasma separator), has been enjoying an excellent reputation in the medical community. Following these achievements, Kaneka commercialized Selesorb, a selective adsorption column for the treatment of systematic lupus erythematosus, and Lixelle for the treatment of dialysis-related amyloidosis.
