Temperature Dependence of Zero Point in Force Transducers: Material Properties of Strain Gages Causing Such Dependence

Several factors influencing the thermal response (zero shift) of force transducers are examined. These factors include strain gage resistance variation, unequal lengths of bridge connection paths, effects of Nickel resistors used to compensate for span shift with temperature, and gage-to-gage differences in temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). Among these factors, the TCR variation appears to be the predominant cause of the temperature-induced zero shift. A temperature compensation procedure based on bridge circuit output differences without accounting for the differences in gage TCR is presented.
