Considerations on the husbandry of sharks for display purposes

The National Aquarium in Baltimore has successfully maintained and exhibited several species of shark for a number of years. Based on the experience of NAIB and others, the information in this paper is intended primarily for institutions contemplating the building or renovation of shark exhibits. It gives an overview of life-support systems (flow-through or closed systems), exhibit focus (open-water or near-shore exhibits, tank configuration), suitability of species (acquisition, hardiness, compatibility) and husbandry (feeding, acclimatization, quarantine).
