In 1989 1.1 Red-billed toucans were donated to Reid Park Zoo, Tucson, and in May 1990 the birds were placed in an outdoor enclosure measuring 6.1 × 2.7 × 2.1 m high containing a nest constructed from the log of a California palm Washingtonia filifera. For the three first clutches, laid in May 1992, May 1993 and May 1994, fertility was not determined and the eggs disappeared. A second clutch in June 1994 was found to be infertile but in July of that year a third clutch of four eggs was laid from which two chicks hatched successfully. This paper describes the nest used for breeding the species and details diet and breeding behaviour, and the growth and development of chicks.
