In 1992/1993 a study was conducted to measure urinary oestrogen and progesterone in Golden monkeys Pygathrix roxellana. Radio-immunoassay, enzyme-immunoassay and the conventional method of measurement were carried out in order to assess which test would identify reproductive status most closely. The procedures used to assay oestrone, oes-triol and oestradiol are also described. Changes in hormone levels and observed sexual behaviour are discussed and it is concluded that the conventional method of detecting oestrus and pregnancy is an efficient one.
