The ‘Living Links to Human Evolution’ Research Centre in Edinburgh Zoo has been designed as a scientific institution managed in a collaboration between the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the University of St Andrews and the Scottish Primate Research Group, which represents a consortium of primatologists at the Universities of St Andrews, Stirling, Abertay, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. The Centre has been created to facilitate behavioural, cognitive and welfare-based research on naturalistically housed monkeys, at the same time introducing the zoo-visiting public to the science embodied in these enterprises, in an educational and even entertaining way. This article outlines the development of this collaboration, the details of how the Centre operates and reports on its early successes.
