A combined axial and paraoesophageal hiatal hernia complicated by splenic involvement was diagnosed in a two-year-old Chinese shar-pei. A circumcostal gastropexy was performed following reduction of the hernia and fundoplication of the cardia The dog recovered well and is asymptomatic six months postoperatively. The literature concerning hiatal hernia in the dog is reviewed and the various surgical techniques described for its management are discussed.
