Mission Matters: Mount Holyoke, Oberlin, and the Schooling of Southern Blacks, 1861–1917
Ronald E. Butchart
Ronald E. Butchart is professor and department head in the Department of Social Foundations of Education at the University of Georgia, and immediate past president of the History of Education Society. This essay owes a great debt to Amy Rolleri for the years of collaborative labor on the project that underlies it. Butchart and Rolleri offer their gratitude to Katherine Kennedy, Alan Wieder, and other colleagues at the University of South Carolina for comments on an earlier draft. This article was presented as the Presidential Address to the History of Education Society's annual meeting in New Haven, Connecticut, 18–21 October 2001.
