The third chapter of Roy Simmonds’s book, The Composition, Publication, and Reception of John Steinbeck’s The Wayward Bus, with Biographical Background, will appear in the Fall 2011 Steinbeck Review. In Chapter Three: “The Book Is Really Being Written under Difficulties”: May—July 1946,” Simmonds traces the changes in Steinbeck's perception of The Wayward Bus from a novella of sixty- to seventy-thousand words to a full-length novel of 100,000 words or more and highlights the author's struggles to bring the novel to completion against the backdrop of problems with his health, with his marriage, and with professional pressures. Chapters four through seven and an epigraph will appear in subsequent issues of Steinbeck Review.
