The idea for this special issue took root after an illustrated paper session on gardens at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in New Orleans in 2003 that examined cultural constructions and experience of nature and how these are made meaningful by the actions of ordinary people in their everyday lives. I thank the editors of the Geographical Review for their faith in this project, the anonymous reviewers for their helpful and critical comments, and all of the contributors for their perseverance and hard work.
