ABSTRACT Continuing dissatisfaction with many of the grammar rules in foreign language textbooks suggests a lack of fundamental standards of rule design. The present paper addresses itself to this need, offering for discussion a preliminary set of general principles for judging the pedagogical utility of proposed grammar rules. The eventual goal is the inclusion in our teaching materials of only those rules which are linguistically accurate, pedagogically sound, and relevant to specified instructional objectives.
