ABSTRACT: The National Endowment for the Humanities provided support to ACTFL to conduct an analysis of the type of support provided by private foundations for foreign language education. Under the special NEH program that funded this project, no new data were to be collected; rather, the study was to be based on analyses of existing data resources. Using the Foundation Center's Grants Index as the primary source of data, ACTFL developed several categories for analyzing and reporting results.
The study revealed a total of 340 grants made in support of foreign language education during the 1973–1984 period, with support totaling $14,983,347. Eighty-three supporting foundations and 178 recipient organizations were identified. The summary report that follows presents the highlights of the study.
