SIMULATION OF STABLE AND NEUROTIC PERSONALITIES BY SUBJECTS WARNED OF THE PRESENCE OF LIE SCALES IN INVENTORIES

Authors

Abstract

A version of the MPI, which in addition to the usual lie scale (LS) included a lie scale to detect malingerers (LM), was administered to independent groups of subjects under five sets of instructions. Group FS was asked to simulate stability, Group FSW to simulate stability and warned of the lie scale, Group C was given the standard instructions, Group FNW was asked to simulate neuroticism and warned of the lie scale, and Group FN was asked to simulate neuroticism. It was concluded (1) that on the neuroticism scale μFS < μFSW < μC < μFNW < μFN, (2) that on the LS scale μFS > μFSW > μC = μFNW = μFN, and on the LM scale μFS = μFSW = μC < μFNW < μFN.
