A simple model of small waves occurring on upper fronts in the rear of quasi-stationary surface cold fronts was derived. The latent heat release is partly included in the modelling assumptions. The analysis of the frequency equation shows that the most intense wave development is to be expected in the regions with the greatest slope of the upper front. During the development of an unstable wave the cusp point is formed on the front. Stable waves are possible in the model, too. The influence of orography may be incorporated in a simplified parametrical form.
