Toward a Theory of Health-Related Family Quality of Life

This article presents a theory of health-related family quality of life (HR-FQoL) for families coping with illnesses that may result in long-term survivorship (e.g., breast cancer). This theory draws on existing theoretical and empirical work to synthesize diverse literatures. Specifically, the theory of HR-FQoL is intended to elucidate the overlap between 2 approaches to understanding quality of life as it relates to illness: family quality of life and health-related quality of life The results is a synthesized conceptualization of health-related family quality of life. The conclusion offers possible applications of the HR-FQoL theory to families experiencing breast cancer and other illness and chronic conditions.
